Have you ever wondered if your work truly makes an impact? For Soshawnah, an intervenor at DeafBlind Ontario Services, there’s no question. I think the most satisfying thing is knowing that everything I do is for the betterment of someone else.”

When speaking of her career and its impact, Soshawnah says, “I know that every day I attend work it is meaningful in some way. With everything happening in the world, going to work and putting a smile on someone’s face makes everything feel a little bit better!”

Intervenors like Soshawnah are professionally trained to act as the “eyes” and “ears” of the person who is deafblind through the sense of touch. By facilitating the exchange of information and assisting with communication methods, intervenors empower people who are deafblind to thrive.

DeafBlind Ontario Services’ professional intervenors foster independence through a holistic and person-centered approach of “do with, not for”. They support people who are deafblind to gain independence, build their life skills, and take an active role in all areas of their lives.

When reflecting on how her work at DeafBlind Ontario Services has impacted her, Soshawnah says, “I’ve been able to use my knowledge of American Sign Language and my social service background to change the lives of others which has always been the goal for me. It’s allowed me to see how witty, intelligent, and personable an individual can be regardless of any disability or barriers they may face.”

“With the support from the intervenors, the sky’s the limit for this community.” says Soshawnah.
