After months of hard work, we are thrilled to announce the grand opening of our Water Street location in Peterborough.

The Water Street location, formerly a 4-unit apartment style home, has undergone extensive renovations to better serve the needs of the people we support. With the addition of two more units, the capacity has increased from 6 to 9 individuals.

The renovation project also focused on enhancing accessibility, incorporating state-of-the-art equipment and design elements to promote maneuverability, functionality, safety, and independence. Some of the equipment includes:

  • Accessible kitchens – A hub of activity, integral to life skills learning; specifically designed for physical and sensory impairments and safe cooking.
  • Accessible bathrooms – roll in showers, lowered counters, slanted mirrors, etc.
  • Elevator – Allows access to all levels.
  • Ceiling track lift system – In bedrooms and bathrooms to give safe access to bathing, exercise equipment, physiotherapy, etc.
  • Auto door openers/self closures – to promote more independent movement in the home

Other accessibility features include things like:

  • Handrails, non-skid flooring,  and contrasting colour palette
  • Tactile room markers to help distinguish each room
  • Wheelchair ramps at home entrances
  • Accessible lighting – a critical feature for vision loss and proper illumination
  • Stroboscopic smoke detectors that emit both sound and flashing light
  • Acrovyn wall covering to protect walls against wheelchair damage

Thank you to the Lions Homes for Deaf People, City of Peterborough, Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, and the Catherine and Maxwell Meighen Foundation for their generous donations that helped in funding this home.
