Building Trust, Breaking Barriers
Dave Lively, a Communication Support Professional with DeafBlind Ontario Services, views his role as much more than assisting with daily routines. To Dave, it is “the responsibility and privilege of supporting individuals through everyday challenges while helping them experience life to the fullest.”
Every day, Dave has a single goal in mind:
“to remove barriers and provide the individual with the support they need to make their own choices and participate as independently as possible.”

The Power of Trust
Three years ago, Dave began supporting an individual with complex communication needs. The path to connection wasn’t immediate.
“At the beginning, I did not always understand what the individual was trying to communicate or what they needed from me,” Dave recalls. But rather than becoming discouraged, he worked to build a strong foundation of trust.
Over three years of working together, he learned to recognize and respond to the individual’s unique ways of communicating.
One of Dave’s proudest accomplishments is knowing when he has earned an individual’s trust. The experience shaped his approach to care, proving that “effective support begins with taking the time to understand the person.”

Expanding Horizons Through Tailored Support
Dave’s work also showcases the incredible impact of tailored, accessible support. While planning an outing for another individual, Dave and his team ensured every destination was accessible so the individual supported could experience life and feel comfortable.
Dave shared that seeing the individual enjoying new experiences without barriers was extremely rewarding. Experiences like these have taught him that “effective support requires creativity, observation, communication, flexibility, and a genuine commitment to understanding the person.”
As Dave looks ahead, his motivation remains rooted in the people he supports and the bonds he has forged. “I am proud to contribute to that process and remain committed to providing compassionate, person-centered, and empowering support.”
