Building Connections, Creating Breakthroughs
For Fang Liu, a Communication Support Professional with DeafBlind Ontario Services, support goes far beyond assisting with basic needs. It’s about building confidence, fostering choice, and celebrating every milestone along the way.
Everyday Moments of Empowerment
An everyday activity that people outside of DeafBlind Ontario Services might not realize goes into helping someone gain independence or connection is hair styling.
Fang supports three young women with long hair and loves turning hair care into a fun, empowering routine. “First, I let them pick out their own hair clips and elastic bands,” Fang explains, honouring their choices and personal style.
This simple ritual offers a moment of self-expression, pride, and joy.

Dancing into a New First
Fang’s work also displays how creativity and encouragement can lead to incredible breakthroughs.
While at the pool with a coworker and an individual she supports who loves the water, Fang noticed she preferred floating while holding onto a staff member’s arm. But when slow music began playing, Fang had an inspiring idea: why not dance together and see if she wanted to try walking in the water for the very first time?
To ensure she felt completely secure, Fang and her coworker placed a pool noodle under her arms for support.
“We gave her lots of encouragement and comfort so she would feel completely safe.”

Supported by their guidance, she successfully touched the bottom of the pool and began walking slowly to the rhythm of the music. “She was absolutely thrilled and made happy, positive sounds the entire time,” Fang recalls.
