Reasons for Joy: Katie’s Story
Katie is 33 years old and was born deafblind.
“Deafblindness is different for everyone. For me, it means navigating life with limited vision and hearing” Katie explains. But with the support of DeafBlind Ontario Services, Katie is not only reaching her goals, but truly thriving.
Since moving to a supported living home, Katie has discovered a new level of joy and independence. “Having my own space gives me a sense of ownership and pride,” she says. With the help of professional intervenors, Katie has built a life where she can make her own choices, pursue her passions, and live free from limitations.
Empowering Independence Through Holistic Support
DeafBlind Ontario Services takes a holistic approach to providing an array of services that are customized to each person’s unique needs, language and method of communication, and goals to increase their independence and enrich their life. Supported living homes provide accessible, barrier-free, affordable housing and access to support services 24/7.
For Katie, the impact has been life-changing. “I use adaptive devices like a screen reader and computer to communicate and express myself. With the help of my intervenors, I can explore my interests and feel more connected to the world. My life is more independent and fulfilling than I ever imagined,” Katie reflects.
Professional intervenors connect the person who is deafblind to other people and their community as a communication partner. By facilitating the exchange of information and assisting with communication methods, intervenors empower people who are deafblind to thrive. DeafBlind Ontario Services’ professional intervenors support the people we serve to gain independence, build their life skills, and actively participate in all areas of their lives.
A Love for Music and a Dream to Inspire
Katie’s greatest passion is music, a source of joy and self-expression since she taught herself to play the piano at the age of seven. Recently, she bought her own piano, which she affectionately named Beauty.
“Music brings me happiness anytime, day or night,” Katie says. “My favorite singers are Taylor Swift and Adele, and I hope to have my original songs professionally recorded one day. My dream is to become a music therapist and help others find joy in music too.”
Katie’s story is a powerful reminder that with the right support, independence, and personal ambitions are within reach. At DeafBlind Ontario Services, we believe in creating opportunities for people who are deafblind to live life on their own terms, just like Katie, who is turning her passion into purpose and inspiring others along the way!
